FREAK 54

Get nasty, get wild and let it all hang out! Sounds about right for a Mr Worldwide song!

Pitbull drops Freak 54 in collaboration with the legendary Nile Rodgers. A track coming again around the track on the upcoming Track House album. Unquestionably this anthem is about to ignite dance floors globally with more heat than a ‘disco inferno.’

Crossing generations, the song is a twist on 70’s ‘Le Freak’ by Chic. Co-written by Nile Rogers himself. A party anthem that lets you boogie down with your mum, gran, and uncles. Pitbull threw out a net and captured a handful of generations in one. The audience is wide and the song and a timeless classic in years to come.

Let’s take a moment to appreciate the iconic 70’s song and how Pitbull has not only refreshed a forty-five-year-old song full speed ahead, he’s also brought the legendary guitarist and co-writer of the original Nile Rodgers along for the ride. Be prepared to be (dance)floored!

Talks of women, a Pitbull gold standard. With a mention of ‘The Greatest’ boxer Muhammad Ali and the fight with Joe Frazier lll in 1975 – ‘Thrilla in Manila.’ I guess what Pitbull is saying is she’s a knockout. “From dope dealer to a hope dealer” Ain’t that the truth! A few shots of all his fan-freaks just about contained in a stadium.

The cover shot is none other than our rockstar photographer Greg Watermann.

Freak 54, Studio 54, flip the numbers around and it’s the age of the original track, 45. We have She’s freaky, I’m a freak, Free.K, now Freak 54 – Not that anyone may think Pitbull might be a freak?

Moving onto the Freak 54 video, let’s tune into channel 305 and enter through a 70’s mahogany TV cabinet straight into Dante’s HiFi. The first vinyl listening bar in Miami where Pitbull is getting his freak on.

Taking us back to the 70’s era with groovy gold and orange themes where the DJ spins the original vinyls of Chic’s ‘Freak Out’ and Pitbull’s 2006 hit ‘Ay Chico’. (More on Ay Chico to come, read on!)

A young Nile Rodgers jamming away on his guitar in the 70’s the set of the original video Freak out and back to today on Freak 54. Vikina on the decks, The Most Bad Ones, Pitbull with a some Voli in hand (Pitbull Product Placement!) where the burgundy suit in the Mala video makes a reappearance, much to my delight. Elsewhere Roni Feliz of The Agent’s makes an appearance with his guitar, Mr 305 Inc artist Chris Daniels putting up the 305 sign with his digits and Bad One, Shani is having a little dance with a pole. She’s “got a lot of talent!”

Pitbull’s Freak 54 video in Dante’s HiFi could be just as borderline-controversial as club Studio 54 which was notorious for people getting busy on the infamous balcony. Right up Pitbull’s street.

A big thank you to music video wizard David Rousseau who shares more insight on directing the Freak 54 video:

“It’s a dream come true, to work with Nile! I grew up watching him on MTV.  Nile’s is a living legend. His on-set energy is creatively inspiring. Everyone knows his music and Freak 54 feels like a song you would put on a mix tape back in the day!”

“Pit really loved how the song ‘freak out’ came about. Nile and chic getting turned away at Studio 54 back in the day…thus inspiring a jam ‘f***k off’ that eventually turned into ‘freak out.’ The song becomes a hit. The ultimate negative to a positive.”

David here, referring to New Year’s Eve 1977 where both Nile Rogers and co-writer Bernard Edwards were turned away at the door of club Studio 54, having been invited by Grace Jones  but the doormen didn’t get the memo. In response, pair wrote the Freak Out as a sticking two fingers up at club. Their original lyrics from F*** Off changed to freak out to meet global audiences.

Similarly, those who turned down a young Pitbull early in his career or countless times he’s been told a song wouldn’t work, leads me to ask the question was Ay Chico one of those songs? As the old vinyl version with the old font logo spins into scene.

Pitbull making and bringing back history in more ways than one. Just when I thought he’s already changed the face of making music, Mr Worldwide has gone beyond.

Freak 54 available for purchase and streaming on all major platforms.

  2. As someone who heard Le Freak by Chic way back in 1978-79 in her childhood days, I must say this is a much welcome reworking of a disco classic. Pitbull nails it once again. ¡Dale! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
